Dovetail Shaker Box with Yarn Cone Roller

I recently made this piece for my older sister’s birthday.

It’s a variation of a traditional shaker dovetailed candle box that has uprights mortise and tenoned through the lid to hold a yarn roller axel. It incorporates rare-earth magnets to help hold the lid closed and to secure the axel through the uprights. The magnets make a very satisfying “clunk.”

The box is made form walnut and the uprights are cherry. All joinery and details were done with hand tools. The under lid art work was done by my beautiful wife. Hopefully, it provides generations of yarn rolling service.
